Les films de guerre m’ennuient. Ils m’ennuient, car ils sont loin de la réalité. La vraie guerre est tellement plus intéressante, mais aussi tellement plus terrible.
Prenons par exemple le film Il faut sauver le soldat Ryan (Saving Private Ryan)…
En regardant le film, on a l’impression que le Débarquement de Normandie a été un véritable enfer. Le film montre pourtant le pire du pire : la plage Omaha. Omaha est justement surnommée « Omaha la sanglante », car à cet endroit les défenses allemandes étaient encore en bon état. Les autres plages n’étaient pas aussi sanglantes. Certaines plages étaient même « presque tranquilles » : les défenses allemandes ayant au préalable été en grande partie anéanties par l’artillerie et l’aviation.
Il faut aussi se rappeler que le Débarquement comprenait plusieurs vagues d’assaut. Le film Saving Private Ryan montre donc la pire plage, et la pire vague d’assaut (la première).
De plus l’aviation alliée empêchait les Allemands d’acheminer des renforts vers les plages. Si les Allemands ont été décevants sur les plages, c’est simplement parce qu’ils n’étaient pas en mesure d’y amener leurs meilleures troupes ! Les combats les plus violents n’ont donc souvent pas eu lieu sur les plages, mais à l’intérieur des terres, après le Débarquement. La majorité des soldats ayant participé au Débarquement n’ont donc tiré aucun coup de feu sur les plages ! Plusieurs de ces soldats ont alors surement pensé que la suite des choses allait être facile ! Plusieurs allaient pourtant mourir. Encore une fois, la guerre, la vraie, est tellement trompeuse et sournoise.
Je vous raconterai prochainement d’autres aspects déformés de ce film. Vous ne regarderez plus les films de guerre de la même façon.

Un film est une oeuvre cinématographique et non un documentaire. Il est aussi dit que les balles ne pouvaient traverser l’eau comme on le voit dans le film, qu’elles étaient stoppées avec l’impact de l’eau; Exact ???
Ces choses que vous dites vous les savez de vétérans et de monographies par des Historiens-nes. Je suis diplômée en Histoire et je vous ai suivi en Ukraine, j’ai pensé à vous tous les jours, espérant surtout que vous ne soyez pas fait prisonnier et torturé. Fort heureusement, du moins pour l’instant, vous allez être parmi votre famille. Vous me faites penser au personnage principal de The Hurtlocker de Katheryn Bigelow, i.e. le plus calme des deux démineurs !

I have not seen Saving Private Ryan so I won’t be able to comment on the authenticity of the movie and what is overly exaggerated.
I guess I won’t be watching Saving Private Ryan 🙂 Movies usually do not do historical or real-life stories justice – books are usually a better media for that.
Even Chris Hadfield (Canadian ISS Commander) reviewed many space movies and he said the only one that came close to reality was Apollo 13.
My first “war genre” TV show was the 1960’s black and white American TV series called Combat. It was my grandmother’s favourite show. And of course MASH was for sheer entertainment. 🙂
I am not a fan of war movies especially when Commando and Rambo ruined it. But my first war movie was Black Hawk Down. The visual effects was impressive and it opened my eyes to what the soldiers were going through especially when it was released around the same time when our Canadian soldiers were in Afghanistan.
I don’t recall watching any other war movie since then but I now have a few on my watch list: 1917, Hurt Locker, American Sniper, Inglorious Bastards, Fury, and Unbroken.
I have read the book Unbroken and it was one of the best books I have ever read. It is a true story of an American soldier who endure torture as a POW. There are not many stories about the Japanese occupation and the atrocities that happened. I am afraid to watch the movie because movies always have a tendency of ruining things. It is not easy to depict everything in a movie.
I am now reading your book “Mission: Sniper” and it gives me another perspective and insights of what war was like in Afghanistan.
For us who have no military experience tend to have a “movie-like imagination” of what is possible during the real war especially now in Ukraine. I kept hoping that some rogue soldiers in Poland would just jump into their fighter jets and bomb the hell out of the Russians around Azovstal. Or we would comment, why can’t we drop food from a plane over Marioupol for the people trapped there. We tend to lose sight of what a real-life situation is actually like in a war zone and we expect it to be like in the movies.
Another topic, but I think that worries many of us. Now what will happen to the defenders of Asovstal. The wounded and a number of fighters have left the plant and been taken prisoner by the Russians. Russia does not want to exchange them, one of the Russian negotiators wants to have them executed. What are the Geneva Conventions for? Putin really is a war criminal
My grandfather was part of D Day combat demolition units’ dangerous assignment involving detonating mines and clearing obstacles at the waterline and on the landing beaches. Many don’t know this but too many soldiers couldn’t swim!! Pops was a strong swimmer & rescued 5 sailers. I didn’t know what a hero he was & regret not asking him more about what really happened. Until his funeral I didn’t know he was a decorated hero with Navy Commendation & Navy Cross. He never spoke of it. He was the calm under fire, reminds me of your persona. Wanting to help the cause of freedom always.
I too wished Poland would go rogue & help rescue Azovstal. There have been several food, ammo & med drops over the past 2 months. They tried to rescue soldiers under cover of darkness earlier in Apr but lost the helicopter, crew & soldiers.
Il est certain que tu as une toute autre perspective de la guerre pour l’avoir vécue sur le terrain. Pour ceux qui n’ont jamais participé au conflit, on a pas vraiment idée de tout ce qui arrive pour les soldats qui y sont déployés. Merci de nous apporter ces précisions!
un film c est loin de la réalité si ils aurait fait un film avec l endroit ou ils y avait pas eu de problème au débarquement cela aurais été plate moi j ai aimer l entrainement dans full métal jacket
